A brief of Numfor island

Numfor is charming island because is located between Biak and Manokwari and it is also tropical island located in cenderawasih bay(formerly know as Geelvink Baai during the Dutch time until 1962) It is part of Schouten islands that consist of Biak, Supiori, Numfor and other smaller island that are important tourist destination to do birdwatching in New Guinea or Papua. Historically, Numfor island was the battle ground between the Japanese and the US forces during World War II. The Japanesse forces occupied the island from the Dutch until 1944 when the American troops bombarded and landed on the island in 1944.Numfor island played a very important role for the US troops when they were trying to defeat the Japanese forces in Sausapor and Morotai islands before they continued their campaign to the Philipines.

Numfor surrounded by beautiful coral reef.Manem is very beautiful island white sandy beach with clean water has pristine coral reef environment and it is take about one hours to arrive there by boat. People who live and stay in this island work as a gardener and other as a fisherman. For daily communication local people speak Biak and Numfor language and also they speak Indonesia languages.Numfor People predominantly is Protestant and others is Moslem from outside tribes who come to stay in Numfor .
Now Numfor island is devided into 5 district Namely: 1.District West Numfor 2.East Numfor 3.Poiru 4.Bruyadori and 5.Orkeri.Here is the name of some village in 5 district Around Numfor island as follow:1.Distrik west Numfor consist of some village namely KAMERI, POMDORI,KANSAI,WARIDO, AMBERIMASI,BARUKI,YENSEMAYEN, SERBIN, NAMBER and SUPMANGGUNGSI.2.Districk of east Numfor consist of some village namely:YENMANU, PYEFURI,KORNASOREN,YENBURWO, ANDEI, WONGGOR BABO,and ASARYENDI.3.District poiru is consist of : SYORIBO,SAURIBRU, MANGGARI,BAWEI, INASI, and SANDAU.4.District Bruyadori is consist of village name is DUAI,INASI,MANDORI, DAFI and AMBERPAREM. 5.District Orkeri is also consist of YENBEBA,YENBEPON, SARIBI,SUPMANDER,RAWAR and WARSA,PAKREKI, WANSRA and MANWOR INDAH with total population is 5000 people.

There are 3 sector to be done to increase the income for local peoples namely:

• Eco tourism,
• Economy based of community, and 
• Fishery and Marine Sectors

The central telecommunication or TELKOMSELL satelIte already done to commucate to other place,Bank,Post office,Airport and shopping center is located in Yenburwo village distrik of East Numfor.Senior and hight school in Kameri village .The road is good to go by car,cycling and motor bike to go around Numfor island.Numfor Island Now is Progress because the Government of Biak Numfor suppor local people with develop their new house with sponsor by RESPEK and PNPN MANDIRI by the Goverment of Papua Province.

Flora and Fauna in Numfor island is also the some with other regent in Papua.You can see Cockatoos,…………………………………………………………… There are various kindof trees such as ,pohon kayu besi, matoa that grows all over the area of Numfor
